Port Jefferson is an incorporated village in the Town of Brookhaven, built around a deep, protected harbor on the north shore. The car ferry to Bridgeport, Connecticut, docks at the foot of the downtown, and the village climbs steeply away from the water on both sides, so a street a block or two from the harbor can sit well above it. The oldest houses date from the nineteenth century, when the village was a shipbuilding center: captains' houses, Victorians, and smaller village houses on narrow lots set close to the street, especially on the hills east and west of Main Street.
South of the downtown, Main Street runs uphill to the train station at the end of the Port Jefferson Branch, an area known as upper Port, where apartments and newer mixed use buildings sit among older storefronts. Northeast of the downtown, along the eastern side of the harbor, the separate village of Belle Terre occupies the northeastern half of the Mount Misery peninsula, a wooded neck that looks out over both the harbor and the Sound, with large houses on big lots and bluff frontage. Across all of it, a Port Jefferson property is defined as much by elevation as by square footage: whether it looks down on the harbor, across it, or out to the Sound, and how the driveway and the stairs get you there.
East of the studio along Route 25A, past Stony Brook and Setauket. Farther than the Three Village towns, and still an easy drive along the north shore.
