Setauket sits at the center of the Three Village area, the name that joins it with Stony Brook and Old Field, in the Town of Brookhaven. Its oldest part, Old Setauket, is a historic district around a village green and a mill pond. The houses there, and along the roads leading away from the green, go back to the 1700s and 1800s: farmhouses, saltboxes, and colonials, many on irregular lots set close to the road with old trees around them.
East Setauket follows Route 25A toward Port Jefferson. North of it, Setauket Harbor and Conscience Bay cut into the shoreline with Strong's Neck between them, so much of the waterfront here faces sheltered water rather than the open Sound. Inland, through East and South Setauket, the housing is mostly twentieth century: colonials, capes, ranches, and high ranches on wooded lots, some on subdivision streets and some set far back on long drives.
