Sag Harbor is an incorporated village on Gardiners Bay, split between the Town of Southampton and the Town of East Hampton along Division Street, with about three fifths of it in Southampton. It was a major whaling port in the nineteenth century, and its whole business district is the Sag Harbor Village District on the National Register of Historic Places, with 870 contributing buildings. Main Street runs down to the water at Long Wharf and the Bay Street marinas, and the landmarks sit close together: the 1845 Greek Revival house that holds the Whaling Museum, the Custom House, and Otter Pond.

Around the center are village streets of houses from the whaling years and later, and the water opens into coves, Upper Sag Harbor Cove among them. Across the arched bridge on Route 114, a village landmark, is the Village of North Haven, and to the west is Noyac on Noyac Bay.
