Oyster Bay, the hamlet, sits at the head of Oyster Bay Harbor on the north shore and gives its name to the much larger Town of Oyster Bay, which runs all the way to the south shore. The downtown is compact: Audrey Avenue, South Street, and East and West Main Street. The LIRR station at the end of the Oyster Bay Branch is on the waterfront, across from Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. The harbor's waters and marshes are part of the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and Sagamore Hill, Theodore Roosevelt's home, stands on Cove Neck just northeast of the hamlet.
The housing stock is old at the center and spread out at the edges. In the hamlet are houses from the 1700s and 1800s, Victorians, and smaller village houses on tight lots near the downtown. Out on the necks and in the villages around the harbor, among them Centre Island, Cove Neck, Mill Neck, and Oyster Bay Cove, are large houses on big wooded or waterfront parcels, many from the estate era. Toward East Norwich and the edges of the hamlet, postwar capes, colonials, and ranches sit on regular lots. Planting Fields Arboretum is a short drive west, in Upper Brookville.
