Smithtown is the hamlet at the center of the Town of Smithtown, in the middle of Suffolk County's north shore. Main Street carries Routes 25 and 25A together from the Smithtown Bull, the statue at the west end of that shared stretch, east through the Village of the Branch, and the Nissequogue River runs north through the town to Smithtown Bay and the Sound. Around the hamlet the housing changes block by block: historic houses along Main Street and in the Branch, some dating to the nineteenth century and earlier, post war capes and ranches on the streets off the main roads, high ranches and split levels through Kings Park and Nesconset, and larger colonials on wooded acreage in the villages of Head of the Harbor and Nissequogue to the north.
