Fort Salonga is a hamlet on the north shore that crosses the line between the Town of Huntington and the Town of Smithtown, with Northport to the west, Kings Park to the east, and East Northport to the southwest. It overlooks Long Island Sound, takes in Crab Meadow on the water, and is named for a Revolutionary War era British fort that colonial forces took after landing on the beach at Crab Meadow. Route 25A, called Fort Salonga Road here, runs east and west through it, and after the Civil War the local red clay supplied a brickworks that shipped by barge to New York City.

Most of the hamlet is residential and wooded. Larger houses sit on wooded lots set back from the road, some on bluffs above the Sound, alongside mid century ranches and capes and newer colonials. On lots like these the house is often hard to see from the street, and the approach, the tree cover, and the drop toward the water are what a buyer needs to see first.
