Stony Brook is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, on the east side of Stony Brook Harbor, across the town line from Saint James and the Village of Head of the Harbor. The harbor is shallow and tidal, edged with salt marsh and intertidal flats, and opens to the Sound near West Meadow Beach. Beside it is the village center, a crescent of white clapboard shops around a village green that opened in 1941, with an eighteenth century grist mill a short walk away. Many of the older houses on the lanes around it share the same clapboard and shingle look: colonials, capes, and a few waterfront houses with long views up the harbor.
Away from the water, Nicolls Road runs through the hamlet, with the Stony Brook University campus and hospital along it as landmarks. Much of the housing to either side of the road is colonials, high ranches, split levels, and ranches on curving subdivision streets under heavy tree cover. So a Stony Brook listing is usually one of two jobs. Near the harbor, the setting and the older detail carry it. On the subdivision streets, it comes down to layout, updates, and the yard.
