Great Neck is the peninsula at the western end of Nassau's north shore, in the Town of North Hempstead, with Little Neck Bay and Queens to the west, Manhasset Bay to the east, and Long Island Sound to the north. It is a group of small villages and unincorporated areas rather than one place: Great Neck Plaza, Great Neck Estates, Kensington, Thomaston, Kings Point, Saddle Rock, and others. Middle Neck Road runs up the middle of the peninsula as its main street, and the LIRR station on the Port Washington Branch sits on it in Great Neck Plaza.

The housing stock runs from dense to open as you head north. Great Neck Plaza, around the station, is mostly apartment, co-op, and condominium buildings. The villages around it hold prewar Tudors and colonials alongside postwar colonials, ranches, and newer houses on regular lots. At the north end, Kings Point, with water on three sides, has large houses on big waterfront lots facing the Sound, Manhasset Bay, or Little Neck Bay, and Steppingstone Park sits on its shore. A Great Neck listing is as likely to be a co-op near the train as a waterfront house looking west toward the city.
