Kings Park is a hamlet in the Town of Smithtown on the north shore, bordered by the Nissequogue River and the Village of Nissequogue to the east, Fort Salonga to the west, Commack to the southwest, and the hamlet of Smithtown to the southeast. Long Island Sound is its northern edge, and state parkland takes up much of it: Sunken Meadow State Park on the Sound, reached by the Sunken Meadow State Parkway, and Nissequogue River State Park along the river, on the grounds of the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center. At the mouth of the river, Kings Park Bluff has a boat launch looking out to the Sound. The downtown runs along Route 25A, and Kings Park has its own station on the Port Jefferson Branch.
Inland, most of the housing is from the second half of the twentieth century: capes, ranches, high ranches, split levels, and colonials on regular lots, with some older houses near the downtown. Toward the river and the Sound the lots get bigger and the ground rises, and a house near the bluffs or the parkland can have a setting that the front elevation gives no hint of.
