Southold is the town that covers the North Fork east of Riverhead, from Laurel and Mattituck through Cutchogue, Peconic, Southold, Greenport, and East Marion to Orient Point, with Long Island Sound on the north and Great and Little Peconic Bay on the south. The hamlet of Southold was settled in 1640. The land was long farmed for potatoes, and since the late twentieth century much of it has been planted as vineyards. Greenport, the town's only incorporated village, is the old whaling and shipbuilding harbor and the end of the LIRR's line, with 254 buildings in its National Register historic district. At the far end, the Orient Historic District holds 120 buildings from the late 1700s to the late 1800s, most of them one and a half story Cape Cod houses in shingle or clapboard, around Orient Wharf.
