Glen Cove is a city, one of two in Nassau County, on the east side of Hempstead Harbor, with Long Island Sound along its northern edge and Glen Cove Creek running west through it into the harbor. Downtown centers on Glen Street and School Street, and the Oyster Bay Branch of the LIRR stops at Glen Street station and Glen Cove station. Much of the city's open space is on the shoreline: Garvies Point Preserve above the harbor, Morgan Memorial Park near the mouth of the harbor, and Welwyn Preserve to the north.

The housing stock follows the city's history. The large estates built here around the turn of the twentieth century left big houses and wooded parcels across parts of the city, some since divided into newer lots or converted. Closer to downtown are Victorian and early twentieth century houses on tighter lots, and the neighborhoods beyond hold postwar capes, ranches, and colonials. On the waterfront at Garvies Point, along Glen Cove Creek, newer condominium and apartment buildings sit beside a waterfront promenade.
