Shelter Island is an island town in Suffolk County, between the North and South Forks, with Shelter Island Sound on three sides and Gardiners Bay on the fourth. Two car ferries on Route 114 reach it: the North Ferry from Greenport, a crossing of about eight minutes, and the South Ferry from North Haven, about five. The island has about 12 square miles of land and a shoreline cut by harbors and creeks: Dering Harbor on the north side, Coecles Harbor on the east, West Neck Harbor at the southwest end, and the peninsulas of Ram Island and Silver Beach, which looks west over Peconic Bay.

Shelter Island Heights, on the hill above the North Ferry landing, began in 1871 as a planned summer resort, and about 70 summer cottages went up there from 1872 to 1880 in Stick, Queen Anne, and Colonial Revival styles. It is now a historic district of 141 contributing buildings on the National and State Registers. The Mashomack Preserve, about 2,000 acres, is held by The Nature Conservancy. With water on every side, a house here is defined by which water it faces and how the land falls to it, and that is what an aerial shows.

Out to the end of the Expressway, then by ferry: the North Ferry from Greenport or the South Ferry from North Haven. The crossing is part of the day, so we plan the shoot around it.

On the ground

What listings in Shelter Island tend to need

  • Victorian cottages in Shelter Island Heights, with porches and trim on the hill above the ferry landing, where exteriors are shot from the slope with the verticals corrected.
  • Waterfront on Dering Harbor, Coecles Harbor, West Neck Harbor, and the bays, where an aerial shows which water the house faces, the dock, and the beach.
  • Houses beside the Mashomack Preserve or other open land, where a drone frame shows what lies beyond the property line.
  • West facing shore at Silver Beach, looking over Peconic Bay, where sunset and twilight frames earn their place.
  • Ferry timing: the crew, the gear, and the drone cross on the ferry, so the shoot is planned around the crossings.

Before the drone goes up

Drone airspace in Shelter Island

By the FAA's Class Airspace data, Shelter Island is Class G at the ground at every point we checked, from Shelter Island Heights to the island's center and Ram Island, with Class E beginning 1,200 feet up. A listing flight under 400 feet needs no airspace authorization here.

Preserve land, including the Mashomack Preserve, has its own rules, so flights are planned from the listing itself, and we check the forecast before the crossing so a windy day does not cost a ferry trip.

Every flight is flown by an FAA Part 107 certified remote pilot. We check the address against the FAA's airspace maps when you book, request any authorization it needs, and check the forecast, NOTAMs, and temporary flight restrictions before the day. If aerials cannot happen on your date, we tell you up front.

Read from FAA data on October 3, 2026, at points in and around Shelter Island. Airspace and tower hours change, and an address near an edge can differ, so treat this as a starting point, not a clearance for any property.

Questions

Questions we get about Shelter Island

Do you photograph listings on Shelter Island, NY?
Yes. Core Media Co. crosses on the North Ferry from Greenport or the South Ferry from North Haven, from a studio at 523 Lake Avenue in Saint James, and shoots listing photography, 2D floor plans, aerials, twilight, and listing video anywhere on the island.
Can you fly a drone on Shelter Island?
Usually, yes. By the FAA's airspace data the island is Class G at the ground, from the Heights to the center and Ram Island, so a flight under 400 feet needs no airspace authorization. Preserve land, including Mashomack, has its own rules, so we fly from the listing itself. Every drone flight is flown by an FAA Part 107 certified remote pilot, and we check the weather and any flight restrictions before the crossing.
How does the ferry affect a Shelter Island shoot?
It sets the shape of the day. We choose the North or South Ferry by where the house sits and what else is on the schedule, add the crossing to the timing, and book a Shelter Island listing as the main job of the day, so a twilight session or a second pass for weather does not hang on the ferry schedule.
What does a listing shoot on Shelter Island cost?
Listing media is priced per listing, the same as in every town on this site: Photos $350, Photos + Floor Plan $395, Photos + Air $495, Full Package $695, and Signature $1,250. A waterfront house usually wants drone, which comes with Photos + Air and above, and Signature adds twilight, which the west facing shore suits.
Who does real estate drone photography and video in Shelter Island, NY?
Core Media Co. does, from the studio at 523 Lake Avenue in Saint James. Drone is included from Photos + Air, $495 per listing, and the Full Package, $695, adds a listing video with aerial footage. Every drone flight is flown by an FAA Part 107 certified remote pilot, and we check the Shelter Island address for airspace, weather, and takeoff rules before the shoot.
Can I get listing photos and video within 48 hours in Shelter Island?
Yes, on the Full Package, which is delivered within 48 hours: the photos, the 2D floor plan, the aerials, and the listing video, in one shared folder with MLS ready sizes, for $695 per listing. For the other packages, Core Media Co. confirms delivery when you book.
How do I book a real estate photographer in Shelter Island, NY?
Send the address and the package you want through the contact form at thecoremedia.co/contact, email studio@thecoremedia.co, or book a 20-minute call. Core Media Co. confirms the day and sends a signed agreement before anything is scheduled. Shelter Island listings are priced the same as every other town, $350 to $1,250 per listing.
